Surviving the Holidays Part 2: Slow Down

This blog post was written by Recovery Help Now’s, Vanessa Blaxland, MFTi.

Shopping in crowds, spending tons of money, stressful family get togethers, and horrific traffic.  This is what the holidays are all about right?!  Unfortunately this is what comes to mind for many people during the holidays.  It’s not hard to see how this type of thinking would make you one grumpy Scrooge.  I mean if this was my experience of the holidays I’d probably want to skip them altogether!  It seems like for many the meaning of the season has gotten lost in our fast paced lives where everything has become about checking off another thing on our list instead of really experiencing the moment.  Decorations up…check….presents wrapped…check….dinner planned…check…visit #1 down… check.

Well I’m here to tell you to SLOW DOWN.  Slow down and take it all in…the smells of the holidays, the beautiful decorations everywhere, and the company you keep.  Taking a minute to reflect on the meaning of the holiday season can help you become more mindful of why you celebrate this this time of year despite its inconveniences at times.  In my own life I’ve found that during these fast paced and stressful times it helps you to be more aware of what you are experiencing in the moment such as the beautiful colors of lights on a tree, the enticing smells from the kitchen that only come this time of year, or the sweet laughter of your family and friends.  Even though many things about the holidays can be inconvenient and stressful, slowing down to reflect on and enjoy the moment has helped me find more gratitude and joy this holiday season.  My hope is that you will you too.  Happy Holidays!
