Service as the 12th Step by Kris Winslow, LMFT

Dictionary Series - Attributes: commitmentThe act of being of service to those in recovery, is simply to be there when someone else in recovery is in need. It does not need to be someone you know, someone in the same meetings as you, or even someone struggling with the same addiction as you. Sometimes it can just be lending an ear. Everyone needs a person to vent to once in awhile. It can be giving a stranger a warm blanket and a kind word. It’s about tuning in to the needs of others and sometimes forgetting about your own for a while.

If finding acts of service does not come naturally to you, use your meetings as a resource. Meeting setup and cleanup is always an option. Greeting newcomers and making them feel welcome is helpful. Ask your sponsor where there may be a need for you. You can really get as involved as you want in this regard. There are opportunities as far as the international level to commit to general service in the program if you feel that is your calling.
