The Benefits of Recovery Groups

This blog post was written by Recovery Help Now’s, Cindy Nigro, MFTi.

If you’ve been struggling with an addiction but have fears around attending a recovery group or a 12-step program then you are not alone.  It can be very difficult to reach out for help and open up to strangers.  Allowing yourself to be vulnerable with others is not easy.  If you have been contemplating attending a recovery group but are not sure if it’s the right fit then here are some benefits that can help you make an informed decision.

Benefit 1: Personal Responsibility

Many will try to blame others for their addiction. Recovery groups are about admitting to your own doings. This can help you get to the root cause of your addiction and not simply blame others. When you take personal responsibility, it makes it harder for you to make up excuses in the future; which helps in preventing a relapse.

Benefit 2: Personal Growth

Recovery groups provide a foundation for self-growth.  You will be able to take your past experiences and learn from them which will help you heal and grow. This growth may benefit you in various ways; such as, improving your relationship with yourself and others.

Benefit 3: Focused on One Purpose

Recovery groups are focused on one topic, which is to keep members clean and sober.  The group will not only stay focused on the addiction itself but will also work on the issues that first made you want to use. This will give you the guidance to grow in new and healthy ways.

Benefit 4: Recovery Groups Can Be Combined with Other Treatment Methods

Recovery groups are most successful when combined with other treatment methods such as 12-step and individual therapy.  Members of recovery groups are always encouraged to begin or continue with their individual or couples therapy.
