Love doesn’t always conquer all. One only has to read the headlines, blogs and other media platforms to see that toxic relationships are a relevant topic. Toxic relationships have been a relevant topic for years, with stories of relationships turning abusive and the increase of divorce rates. The topic of toxic relationships raises two important questions. What is a toxic relationship?  What are the warning signs of a toxic relationship?

Toxic relationships are just that, they are toxic. The relationship between the two parties is unhealthy, often leaving one partner extremely dissatisfied, unhappy and resentful. A relationship doesn’t have to turn toxic, warning signs do exist. The following are 5 warning signs that a relationship either is toxic or could become toxic.

While one partner declares their love for the other partner, their negative actions towards their partner show otherwise.

1. One partner uses harsh and negative language towards their partner. This can be in private or in public. These harsh words can be accusatory, degrading and humiliating in nature.

2. One partner takes action to remove their partner from their friends and family. Thus creating an environment where one partner is entirely dependent on the other for financial stability, emotional needs, physical contact and social engagement.

3. One partner begins to control or is controlling a high percentage of their partner’s life. This can include opening their mail, monitoring their phone conversations and dictating what that individual can and cannot do.

4. Abuse or neglect in the areas of physical, mental, sexual, emotional and verbal.

If a relationship is going to turn toxic, the signs are not always seen overnight. It is common for the toxic partner to integrate their control and abusive nature over time. Toxic relationships can occur in any demographic; there are not age limitations, socioeconomic limitations, race limitations or sexual preference limitations. The most important factor for individuals to keep in mind upon entering a relationship is being mindful.

By being pro-active and mindful when entering a relationship, there is a high chance that a toxic relationship can be avoided. A clear understanding of what a healthy relationship entails will empower an individual to not fall into the pitfalls of a toxic relationship.

Healthy relationships are centered on mutual respect and open communication. If these two elements are not present, there is a chance that your relationship is unhealthy. Having a healthy self-image is also an important factor. When these elements are in place, a healthy relationship will develop resulting in both parties being satisfied.

Experiencing a toxic relationship does not mean that one is permanently stuck. Seeking professional assistance and opening up to a trusted individual will empower the dissatisfied individual to leave the toxic relationship. Pay attention to the warning signs of a toxic relationship and if you believe you are in one, know that you have the option to walk away. This opens the door for experiencing healthy and happy love, which we all deserve.
